Sundarkand (सुन्दरकाण्ड) is the fifth and one of the most revered sections of the Hindu epic Ramayana, written by the sage Valmiki. The term “Sundarkand” means “beautiful chapter” or “beautiful section”—Sundar meaning beautiful, and Kand meaning section or book.

Focus on Hanuman: The Sundarkand primarily narrates the heroic exploits of Lord Hanuman as he leaps across the ocean to reach Lanka (modern-day Sri Lanka) in search of Sita, the wife of Lord Rama who was abducted by the demon king Ravana.

Major Events in Sundarkand:

  1. Hanuman crossing the ocean to Lanka.
  2. Meeting Vibhishana, Ravana’s righteous brother.
  3. Discovering Sita in the Ashok Vatika.
  4. Hanuman’s confrontation with demons in Lanka and burning of the city.
